Announcer: This morning we are here speaking with Catherine Reynolds and we are here to talk about student loans or student financing, I guess, but with a difference, right?

Catherine B. Reynolds: With a difference, in today’s world we hear a lot of talk about how expensive higher education is and while it is expensive it’s even more expensive not to go…even with that cost I think it is important to understand what your options are in terms of borrowing because we have heard a lot about college debt and so you want to be very responsible about that. There is a variety of ways to fund one’s college education…you can do it through savings but most people don’t have that kind of savings, this is a mainstream problem how to pay for higher ed. You also have your options for federal loan programs and the federal loan programs are very good in their terms but there are limitations with deadlines, and with loan limits.  So we’ve created a program that we believe helps individuals where they can apply online – it’s quick it’s easy. It is unsecured lending and it is designed to meet the financial rhythm of the family.

Announcer: Pleasure to have you, now what is the best way for a family to pay for college, and let's face it, there are many ways to do it, but I think a lot of parents are confused.

Catherine B. Reynolds: Well, I think confusion is what is out there…you have federal programs that have a process and an application flow with deadlines and a there are a variety of programs that are offered by the federal government, by state government and then schools have their specific programs and then of course there are other options such as the program we do at Loan to Learn which is non-government guaranteed and then folks have their savings and they wonder: should use my savings or should I use a loan program or home equity loans? With each one of those there are pluses and minuses and individuals have to look at what works best for them and their financial rhythm.

Announcer: What advice would you give a family that is making an education financial decision today?

Catherine B. Reynolds: Well, when you think about it education for most families is the 2nd largest expenditure that that family has behind the purchase of their home. So when I talk about the cost of education - and there is a lot of discussion about the cost and how expensive it is - I remind people that it is really an investment – while we think it is expensive to go to college it is much more expensive for the individual not to.  Because a college education at a minimum - you will probably earn a million dollars or more over your life time with a college degree versus if you only have a high school diploma.

Announcer: Why is it that you do what you do?

Catherine B. Reynolds: Well I have to tell you – I grew up in a family where my father did not go to college – but college was the most important value / education in our family and I believe education transformed my life and today that need for education is even greater than it was when I was in school and so with my experience and track record I believe I can make a bigger difference in the world by helping people go to college.
